How to show up on social media without selling your soul.
I didn’t know how passionate I was about keeping things real on social media until I was scrolling LinkedIn one evening and immediately felt like absolute sh*t. You’d think, working on social media accounts LITERALLY every day, I’d understand the whole “it’s your shop front” and “it’s just the highlights” but seemingly the perfect posts of perfect business owners doing everything…well, perfectly, got to me.
Suddenly, I felt we weren’t big enough, doing enough or getting anything right and the weight of running a business suddenly felt really heavy.
Here are a few things I’ve implemented to help protect my mental health but still show up… because love it or lump it, social media isn’t going anywhere soon.
1. Stay true to yourself. You don’t have to share your whole life to be “liked” on social media but it does help to be honest. Don’t be afraid to share the lows as well as the highs of your career/business, you’ll be surprised how many others relate and are thankful for you opening up.
2. Screenshot good comments. If you’re active on social media, chances are you’ve had a few decent comments that make your heart happy, keep a record of these and refer back to them for a quick boost.
3. Plan ahead. This is simple but planning ahead for your own socials is really important to keep focused and reduce scrolling time on those “can’t cope” days.
4. Find a boost buddy. This sounds a bit cliche but (and I actually wish I’d realised this sooner) find your champion. This can be a friend, family member or someone in the business space that has your back no matter what. So, on those impostery days they can remind you why you’re brilliant.
5. External proofing. If you’re unsure, ask someone you trust to proofread your posts. They will be able to tell you if A, it sounds like you, B, if it’s useful and C, how good it is.
